About Redactor
A small, independent tool built around one idea: redacting a sensitive PDF shouldn't require uploading it anywhere.
Why Redactor exists
Most free PDF redaction tools work by uploading your file to a server, processing it there, and sending it back. For a document you're redacting specifically because it contains something sensitive, that round trip is the opposite of reassuring. Redactor was built to remove that step entirely: the PDF is opened, edited, and saved using only your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
The other common failure mode is tools that only draw a black box on top of a page. The content underneath is still there, and can often be copied out or extracted. Redactor's redaction is physical: marked content is deleted from the file itself, not covered up. See the FAQ for more on how that works.
Who runs it
Redactor is operated independently, under the trading name Redactor. It isn't backed by a larger company, and there's no funding round or roadmap beyond keeping the tool working well and free. It's a single-purpose project rather than a product suite.
How it's funded
Redactor is free to use, with no account and no page limits tied to redaction. Running and maintaining the site has real costs, so the site may show advertising to help cover them. Any advertising relates only to the website; it has no access to your files, which are never uploaded in the first place. See the Privacy Policy for details.
